Exploring Flags of the World: A Fun Learning Journey for Young Minds

UX Research

  • The project aims to help primary school students aged 6-8 (Class 2 and 3) learn about flags from various countries. Led by Ms. Anisha, the project seeks to bridge the gap between the students' knowledge of country names and their awareness of iconic flags. The initial focus will be on 30 countries, with plans to expand the scope gradually.

  • A Primary school level teacher- Ms Anisha is struggling to figure out the best methods to help the children of class 2 & 3(Age group 6-8 years) Students learn the concept of Flags of different countries.Ms. Anisha also mentioned that the students know most of the Country’s name but not the flags. She is unsure about how she can help her students understand the iconic flags and memorize them given the multiple colors and symbols used. She is looking for a solution so that she can easily make her students understand the various Country flags, Ms, Anisha is ready to start with 30 countries at the moment and slowly she wants to include all the rest of the countries. The Scenario is purely hypothetical and resolves around an imaginary character Ms,Anisha.

  • Students Between class 2-3 for basic understanding of their process to memorize.
Students From class 5-10 for understanding their experience during the time of learning
Teachers teaching general knowledge social science and Primary Teachers

  • There are three main types of memory that are processed in the brain: Sensory Memories ,
    Short-term Memories ,Long-term Memories

Sensory memories are the memories which are stored for tiny time periods and which originate from our sensory organs (such as our eyes or our nose). They are typically retained for less than 500 milliseconds.
does not attempt to make sense of the whole image received but rather to a small set of features of the image – such as colors, shapes, tilt, curvature, contrast, etc.
Short-term memory is used to process sensory memories which are of interest to us. If Reharsed it may remain in short-term memory for a longer period up to a few hours in length. We can store between 5 and 9 similar items in short-term memory at the most.
In order for most memories to transfer from short-term to long-term memory – conscious effort must be made to effect the transfer. The repeated application of information or rehearsing of information enables the transfer of the material they are studying to long-term memory.

  • The key link between design and human memory is that interaction takes place in sensory and short-term memory for most users. This means paying careful attention to not providing more than 9 chunks of data in a visualization (and ideally no more than 5) and trying to ensure that you use a single visualization to convey the information because once someone’s attention moves from one image to another – the first is quickly forgotten.

81% Students find it difficult to remember things directly taught in class.

62% Find it difficult to focus more than 20 mins in a particular subject

73% Doesn’t like the subject due to the teacher

80% Doesnt remember countries name and flag after the exams

Research & Analysis

  1. Qualitative Analysis
From the understanding of human memory, 3 user groups were taken to understand in particular about the features they can remember from the various flags of different countries , 4 flags were shown to users for 30 sec and after that questions came on screen and they were asked to identify the shapes and colors .

The test gives a idea of the features in flag which are easily remembered and which features in flag need more reharsals to memorize.

  2. Quantitative Research
To get an over view of the users practices and likeness , to compherend the users goal and understand the habits , Hobbies, attention span and Behavior towards the classroom.

  3. Screeners
    - Students approach towards learning -Time. Attention ,Likingness
    - Chapter specific Plans , Interests, Reasons
    - Memorizing Methods, visual memory and textual Learning.
    - Hobbies and Personal info
